How do I publish my Web site?

Set up a temporary one-page placeholder site while you research alternatives.

While you research alternatives for publishing your Web site, you should set up a simple one-page Web site that viewers will see when they type your domain name in their browser (http://[domain_name]).

One option is the Web Builder publishing option (accessible to account administrators via the XO® Gateway). This is the perfect tool for any administrator – regardless of their expertise level – to publish a simple, customized and professional one-page site. You can upload your company or organization's logo, a graphic and customized text.

Because it is available in the XO® Gateway, you don't need to purchase any software to use it. However, one must be a Master Administrator or Domain Administrator to use Web Builder.

To get started, click the Menu Map → Web BuilderEnable Web Builder (when logged in) and follow the instructions. Web Builder FAQs are available for reference.

Research publishing options and publish your site.

Here are some of your options for publishing your permanent Web site:

  1. Use XO Web Site Hosting Web Builder. Web Builder is a browser-based publishing tool accessed via the XO® Gateway by Master Administrators or Domain Administrators. You don't need to purchase any software to use it. Web Builder provides different pre-built Web site templates for various types of businesses, and lets you customize colors, layouts, text, graphics and other content, simply and easily. See our Web Builder FAQs for more information.

  2. Depending on your type of account and options selected, XO Web Site Hosting offers a variety of extra features you can use to build your Web site. Some features are included in accounts at no cost, and some require additional fees. These include:
    • PayPal® - easy to use e-commerce option.
    • MySQL® - a very popular open source database.
    • Web site and Business Productivity Applications - easy to install scripts that provide features including Zen Cart, osCommerce, MediaWiki, DAlbum, WordPress, phpMyAdmin - a MySQL interface, blogs and more.
    • Scripting language support - PHP, Perl, and various shell languages are supported. (Standard accounts only)
    • Active Server Pages (ASP) - allow you to add scripting to your pages. (Windows® hosted accounts only)
    • Microsoft SQL Server ™ (Windows® hosted accounts only)
    • ODBC - Microsoft® Access based database. (Windows® hosted accounts only)

  3. Use a client publishing package like Microsoft® FrontPage or Publisher, or Macromedia® Dreamweaver® among others – There are variety of popular Web publishing tools that can be used to publish your Web Site Hosting site.
Note that while some programs use the standard File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to publish files into your Web space, others (like FrontPage®) require some initial setup within your XO Web Site Hosting account.

Please look over the FAQs about FrontPage or Publisher for information on using these programs. Also note that while Menu Map → Help CenterContact Customer Care (when logged in) provides support to our customers on how to set up these tools for publishing a XO Web Site Hosting site, you will need to consult the manual of your software program for assistance on how to use these tools.

  4. Hire a Web developer to publish your site. Many small to medium size businesses decide to hire someone to design and develop their site. We also offer the services of our Professional Services Group. This group of talented people is intimately familiar with our services and can make sure you're getting the best from your account.

  5. Do it yourself and upload your site content using the File Manager or an FTP program. This option is used by customers who have extensive expertise in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and scripting languages, but is not recommended for novices. Please reference the Help Center for more detailed documentation on our tools for those customers with this expertise.
